A highlight of this season’s cultural agenda is the 18th annual Wildlife Weekend Photography Contest hosted by the Friends of Steele Creek Nature Center and Park. This event invites amateur and professional photographers to capture the essence of nature and wildlife, celebrating the natural beauty our region has to offer. Digital submissions are currently being accepted, and promise to showcase breathtaking images of local flora and fauna.
In addition to the photo contest, there will be a variety of local performances and community gatherings. The Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society and Museum will sponsor a steam train excursion on the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad on September 14. The scenic steamboat excursion departs from the historic depot in Bryson City, North Carolina, travels through the western North Carolina countryside, enters the Nantahala Gorge, and returns to Bryson City. Passengers ride in restored antique passenger cars. Restrooms are available throughout the train. The Kingsport Model Train Project operates eight model train sets in six rooms at the Lynn View Community Center, including a 24×20 “O” scale representation of the Santa Train. There is a business day every Tuesday from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM and an open house on the first Saturday of every month from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
